Burnout Summer by Jenna Ramirez is the kind of emotionally addictive summer romance that completely pulls you in from the very first chapter. Blending friends-to-lovers tension, post-grad uncertainty, coastal small-town charm, emotional healing, and beach-town escapism, the novel delivers a heartfelt and immersive contemporary romance that feels perfectly made for summer reading season. Set against the backdrop of a Rhode Island beach town, this is exactly the type of book that is impossible to put down once you start.
The story follows Camille Luna, whose life feels like it is quietly falling apart after graduation. Stuck in a soul-crushing corporate job, overwhelmed by student debt, and emotionally disconnected from her once-close group of college friends, Cam finds herself spiraling after a difficult breakup and mounting pressure about her future. Everything changes when Danny Brennan — her longtime friend and former college burnout — offers her the chance to spend the summer working at his family’s beachside restaurant in Rhode Island. What begins as an escape quickly turns into something far more emotionally complicated as old friendships resurface, unresolved feelings begin bubbling to the surface, and Cam starts questioning the life she thought she was supposed to want.
I absolutely loved this book. It was one of those perfect summer reads that completely consumed me from beginning to end. I read it in two days because I genuinely could not put it down. Jenna Ramirez creates such an immersive coastal atmosphere that it feels like you are spending the summer right alongside Cam — working beachside shifts, swimming in the ocean, reconnecting with friends, and slowly falling into a romance that feels both comforting and emotionally messy in the best way. The emotional pacing of the story worked so well for me, and I became incredibly invested in Cam’s journey of figuring out who she wanted to be outside of everyone else’s expectations.
A Beachside Friends-to-Lovers Romance Filled With Emotional Growth and Summer Escapism
One of the strongest parts of the novel was the emotional realism behind Cam’s burnout and quarter-life crisis. The story captures that overwhelming post-college feeling of uncertainty, pressure, exhaustion, and fear about the future in a way that feels incredibly relatable. At the same time, the romance between Cam and Danny develops naturally and gradually, allowing their history, chemistry, and emotional connection to build throughout the story rather than feeling rushed. Danny especially stood out as such a lovable romantic lead, balancing laid-back charm with emotional depth in a way that made their relationship easy to root for.
Jenna Ramirez does a fantastic job balancing emotional vulnerability, friendship dynamics, romance, humor, and summer beach-town energy throughout the novel. The seaside Rhode Island setting adds so much warmth and atmosphere to the story, while the emotional themes underneath the romance give the book real depth beyond the lighter summer aesthetic. Readers who enjoy friends-to-lovers romance, emotional contemporary fiction, beach-town settings, found family dynamics, and character-driven romance stories will likely fall in love with this book.
