Operation Boyfriend

Zarah Detand

★★★★☆

Romance, Contemporary Romance, LGBTQ+ Romance, Beach Reads

Operation Boyfriend by Zarah Detand is a fun and emotionally engaging contemporary romance that blends fake dating, destination wedding drama, tropical vacation escapism, and emotional vulnerability into an entertaining and easy-to-devour romance read. Set against the backdrop of a luxury tropical resort, the novel delivers exactly the kind of chemistry-filled vacation romance that keeps readers emotionally invested from beginning to end.

The story follows Dean Hollis, a successful surgeon who desperately needs a date for his sister’s tropical destination wedding so his family will stop worrying about his perpetually single status. His solution comes in the form of Taylan Carter, who agrees to pretend to be Dean’s boyfriend in exchange for an all-expenses-paid luxury getaway. What begins as a simple arrangement quickly becomes more complicated as real feelings begin to develop between them while navigating family expectations, emotional baggage, jealousy, attraction, and the looming reality of returning home once the vacation ends.

Overall, this was a really enjoyable romance read that held my interest the entire time. Although the storyline follows the classic “fake relationship turns real” trope that romance readers have seen many times before, the author does a great job making the emotional connection between Dean and Tay feel believable and easy to root for. Their chemistry carries the novel, and I found myself genuinely wanting them to figure things out despite the inevitable complications that arise once real life starts interfering with the fantasy of the vacation setting.

A Tropical Fake-Dating Romance Filled With Chemistry and Emotional Tension

One of the strongest parts of the novel was the dynamic between Dean and Tay. Their banter felt natural, the emotional vulnerability built gradually throughout the story, and the tension between fantasy and reality kept the relationship emotionally engaging. While there is the predictable frustrating period where both characters become a bit stubborn once the vacation ends and real life re-enters the picture, it ultimately fits the emotional arc of the story and adds to the payoff of their relationship development.

Zarah Detand balances humor, romance, emotional tension, and lighter beach-read energy very well throughout the novel. The tropical destination setting gives the story an addictive vacation atmosphere, while the emotional depth underneath the romance keeps it from feeling overly shallow or repetitive. Readers who enjoy fake dating, destination weddings, forced proximity, and emotionally satisfying LGBTQ+ contemporary romance stories will likely find a lot to enjoy here.
