A Literary / Contemporary Fiction Book Review

Our Extraordinary Summer.png

Our Extraordinary Summer by Lori Wilde is an emotionally layered women’s fiction novel that explores family dynamics, estrangement, and the complicated path toward healing. Set on a secluded island retreat, the story blends heartfelt emotion with long-buried secrets, creating a narrative that is both intimate and deeply reflective.

The novel follows sisters Calista and Athena Dempsey, who were once inseparable until their father’s influence and a painful betrayal drove them apart. After the death of their mother, the sisters are brought back together on Hobby Island to fulfill her final wish. What begins as a reluctant reunion quickly becomes a journey into the past, forcing both women to confront old wounds, unresolved tension, and the truth behind the family dynamics that shaped them.

As the story unfolds, Calista must also face Reid Thornton—the man who once held her heart and played a role in unraveling her life. With emotions running high and long-standing pain resurfacing, both sisters are forced to decide whether they can move forward—or remain trapped in the roles they’ve always known.

Overall, I absolutely loved this book. It was incredibly moving and emotionally resonant, especially in its portrayal of complex family relationships. This story deeply resonated with me on a personal level. Having experienced narcissistic family dynamics myself, I found the portrayal of both the “golden child” and the “scapegoat” incredibly accurate and thoughtfully handled. As an only child, I’ve felt the weight of both roles at different times, and I could empathize with each sister as they navigated their journey of what they believed to be true versus the reality of their situation. The pacing flows naturally, allowing the emotional weight of the story to build in a way that feels both intentional and impactful.

A Powerful Exploration of Family Roles, Healing, and Truth

At its core, this novel explores the lasting impact of family roles and how they shape identity. The portrayal of the “golden child” and the “scapegoat” dynamic is handled with nuance and depth, making the emotional journey of both sisters feel incredibly real. The story highlights how deeply these roles can influence not only relationships but also self-perception and personal growth.

The writing is emotionally grounded and thoughtful, capturing the tension, pain, and eventual possibility of healing in a way that feels honest rather than idealized. Both Calista and Athena are well-developed characters, each carrying their own version of the past, which adds complexity to their reconciliation.

What makes this story especially powerful is how it navigates the space between what we believe about our past and the reality of what actually happened. The unraveling of these truths adds a quiet intensity to the narrative, keeping the reader fully engaged.
