A Historical Fiction Book Review

The Lavender Keeper by Fiona McIntosh is a beautifully written historical fiction novel set during World War II, weaving together multiple perspectives against the stunning yet dangerous backdrop of occupied France. Blending love, sacrifice, and espionage, the story captures both the brutality of war and the quiet resilience of those living through it.
The novel follows Luc, Lisette, and Colonel Kilian, each navigating their own roles in a world shaped by conflict, loyalty, and survival. As Luc joins the French Resistance and Lisette undertakes a dangerous mission within the Gestapo, their paths intertwine in ways that are both emotionally complex and deeply compelling. Through these three perspectives, the story unfolds with tension and depth, showing how each character’s choices impact not only their own fate but the lives of others around them.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book. The way the story is told through three different characters and seamlessly intertwined works incredibly well. It adds layers to the narrative and keeps you fully invested in each perspective. I just wish we had a little more at the end—I wasn’t quite ready to let these characters go.
A Multi-Perspective Historical Fiction Set in Occupied France
At the heart of the novel is the exploration of love, loyalty, and the impossible decisions forced by war. Set among the lavender fields of Provence and the tension-filled streets of Paris, the setting feels vivid and immersive, contrasting beauty with danger in a way that enhances the emotional impact of the story.
The writing is atmospheric and engaging, with strong character development across all three perspectives. Each voice feels distinct, and the transitions between them are smooth, creating a cohesive and powerful narrative that keeps the story moving while deepening the emotional stakes.
