The Carnival Murders
by Irina Shapiro
★★★★☆
A Historical Mystery Book Review

The Carnival Murders by Irina Shapiro is a dark and atmospheric historical mystery set in Victorian London, centered on justice, obsession, and the unsettling line between duty and darkness. The story follows nurse Gemma Tate and Inspector Sebastian Bell as they prepare for their future together—until the discovery of a brutally murdered young woman pulls them into a chilling and complex investigation.
As more deaths emerge, all seemingly connected to a traveling carnival, the case deepens into something far more sinister. While Gemma works to uncover the truth through her work in the postmortem room, Sebastian pursues the killer among the living. What begins as a single tragic death quickly becomes a race against time to stop a pattern of violence before it escalates further.
Overall, I was completely pulled into this story—it was incredibly well written and hard to put down. That said, the level of detail in the autopsy scenes was much more graphic than I expected, and at times, it felt like too much. If you’re sensitive to that, it’s something to be aware of. But despite that, the pacing, tension, and character development kept me fully invested, and I found myself rooting for Gemma the entire time.
A Story of Darkness, Justice, and Relentless Pursuit
At the heart of the novel is the partnership between Gemma and Sebastian, both navigating the case from different angles but united in their determination to find the truth. Gemma’s role in the postmortem examinations adds a unique and often unsettling perspective, while Sebastian’s investigation brings urgency and momentum to the story.
Irina Shapiro leans heavily into the darker elements of Victorian crime, exploring the realities of death, forensic work, and the psychological toll of chasing a killer. The carnival backdrop adds an eerie, almost haunting atmosphere that heightens the sense of unease throughout the book.
