A Middle Grade Contemporary Fantasy Book Review

When Tomorrow Burns book cover

When Tomorrow Burns by Tae Keller is a middle grade contemporary fantasy about fate, friendship, and the frightening possibility that the future might already be written. The story follows three best friends—Nomi, Vi, and Arthur—who once discovered a mysterious book of prophecies that seemed to predict their lives. As they grow older and drift apart, the final prophecy begins to unfold, threatening fire, destruction, and the future of their friendship.

My ten-year-old daughter read this book as an Advanced Reader Copy through NetGalley, and she absolutely loved it. She reads at about a sixth-grade level and flew through this one, constantly wanting to talk about what might happen next.

What stood out most to her was the mystery surrounding the prophecy book and how the characters tried to figure out whether the future could actually be changed. The tension builds slowly as the predictions start coming true, which made the story feel exciting and a little bit suspenseful without ever becoming too scary for middle grade readers.

A Story About Friendship, Fate, and Growing Up

The novel centers around three childhood friends whose lives begin to pull in different directions as they enter seventh grade. Nomi becomes increasingly worried when the final prophecy begins to come true—especially as wildfires threaten Seattle and tensions grow within the group.

Vi is dealing with her own changes and secrets, including texting the most popular boy in school and trying to figure out who she wants to become. Meanwhile, Arthur has joined the cross-country team but is struggling with the real reason his friendship with Nomi started to fracture.

As the prophecies escalate and the pressure builds, the story weaves together questions about destiny, loyalty, and whether friendship can survive when everything starts to change.
