More Than Enough by Anna Quindlen is a women’s fiction novel centered on friendship, family identity, and the quiet ways life can shift when we begin questioning what we thought we knew about our past. The story follows Polly Goodman, a high school English teacher whose life feels steady and predictable—anchored by her husband, her students, and the close friendships she shares with the women in her book club.
When Polly receives the surprising results of an ancestry test that appear to connect her to a stranger, it sets off a chain of questions about family history and identity. What begins as a curiosity gradually forces Polly to reconsider the foundations of the relationships and stories that have shaped her life.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, but the storytelling sometimes felt a little muddied to me. As Quindlen tells Polly’s story, the narrative moves quickly between different aspects of her life—her friendships, her marriage, her work, and the questions surrounding her family history.
At times, the story bounced from one thread to another so quickly that it became harder to follow. It occasionally felt like the narrative was jumping rapidly between thoughts and moments without always lingering long enough in one place. Because of that, parts of the middle felt slightly scattered, even though the emotional core of the story remained compelling.
A Story About Friendship, Family, and Identity
Much of the novel centers around Polly’s book club—the group of women who know her best and who have been part of her life for years. These friendships form the emotional backbone of the story, highlighting how relationships evolve over time and how deeply our lives can become intertwined with those around us.
Quindlen writes particularly well about the quiet complexities of long-term relationships and the ways people support one another through life’s unexpected turns. Even when the narrative wandered, the insights into friendship and identity kept the story engaging.
