The Devoted

Catherine Cho

★★★☆☆

Literary Fiction, Crime Fiction, Women's Fiction, Psychological & Domestic Thrillers

The Devoted by Catherine Cho is a literary family saga that blends historical fiction, organized crime, family loyalty, identity, forbidden love, and generational trauma into an emotionally layered story spanning decades. Set primarily in Hong Kong, the novel follows one woman's struggle to escape the shadow of her family's ties to the Triads while examining the sacrifices people make for love, survival, and belonging. Rich in atmosphere and cultural detail, The Devoted offers an ambitious exploration of fate, family, and the lasting impact of the choices we inherit.

The story follows Eunha, a young Korean woman raised in Hong Kong by her grandmother while her father serves as a powerful Dragon Head within the Triads. Determined to build a different life, Eunha marries into a respected family and attempts to leave her troubled past behind. But when tragedy strikes and her young son is kidnapped, she is pulled back into the dangerous criminal world she fought so hard to escape. As old relationships resurface and family loyalties are tested, Eunha must decide how far she is willing to go to protect the people she loves.

Overall, The Devoted was a mixed read for me. The premise immediately caught my attention, and I appreciated the way Catherine Cho explored family loyalty, identity, and the influence of organized crime across generations. The story itself is compelling, and there are several moments that showcase the emotional weight of Eunha's journey. However, I struggled to fully connect with the characters throughout the novel. While I admired the story being told, I never quite felt immersed in it, which made it difficult for me to become emotionally invested. I often felt like I was observing the events unfold rather than experiencing them alongside the characters.

An Ambitious Story That Lacked Emotional Connection

One of the novel's greatest strengths is its premise. The combination of family drama, historical context, and the inner workings of Hong Kong's criminal underworld creates a fascinating foundation for the story. Cho also paints a vivid picture of the setting, allowing readers to appreciate the cultural backdrop and the complexities of the world her characters inhabit.

Despite the strong concept, I found the emotional distance between myself and the characters difficult to overcome. Their motivations often made sense intellectually, but I rarely felt deeply connected to their experiences. Because of that, many of the novel's biggest emotional moments didn't have the impact I was hoping for.

The writing itself is thoughtful and often beautifully descriptive, and readers who enjoy quieter literary fiction may appreciate its measured pacing. For me, though, the novel never reached the level of emotional immersion that I look for in stories centered on family relationships and personal sacrifice.

Final Thoughts

The Devoted presents a compelling story about family, survival, and the lasting pull of one's past. Catherine Cho builds an atmospheric world filled with difficult choices and emotional complexity, and I appreciated the unique setting and ambitious scope of the novel. While the story itself held my interest, I struggled to form a meaningful connection with the characters, which kept me from becoming fully invested in their journey. Although it wasn't the right fit for me, I think readers who enjoy literary fiction with a more observational style may have a very different experience.
