The Parisian Chapter by Janet Skeslien Charles is a historical fiction novel that blends friendship, art, literature, self-discovery, and emotional resilience into a story centered around two young women chasing creative dreams in 1990s Paris. Best known for The Paris Library, Janet Skeslien Charles once again explores the emotional pull of Paris, weaving together themes of belonging, reinvention, friendship, and the complicated realities of building a life far from home.
Set in Paris during the mid-1990s, the novel follows Lily Jacobsen, a young woman from Montana who moves to France alongside her best friend Mary Louise in hopes of becoming an artist. After years of struggling financially while trying to establish themselves creatively, Lily suddenly finds herself alone when Mary Louise unexpectedly leaves their shared apartment. Searching for stability and purpose, Lily takes a position at the American Library in Paris, where she becomes immersed in a world filled with writers, artists, volunteers, and hidden stories connected to the city’s literary history. As Lily settles into her new life, she uncovers personal connections to the past while also learning difficult truths about friendship, identity, and finding independence.
Overall, this was a fairly solid historical fiction read that I ultimately enjoyed, even if it did not fully emotionally resonate with me the entire way through. One of the strongest aspects of the novel was its 1990s Paris setting, which felt refreshing and surprisingly unique within historical fiction. You rarely see books set during that specific period, and Janet Skeslien Charles captures the atmosphere of Paris, artistic ambition, and the uncertainty of young adulthood exceptionally well. Lily’s storyline in particular was wonderfully written, and I found myself consistently invested in her personal growth and emotional journey throughout the novel.
A Literary Paris Story About Friendship, Creativity, and Finding Yourself
One area where I struggled slightly with the novel was the structure and shifting perspectives throughout the story. The author frequently inserts chapters from secondary characters’ points of view in order to provide additional backstory and emotional context. While I understood why those perspective shifts were included and appreciated the added depth overall, the transitions occasionally disrupted the pacing for me and made parts of the narrative feel somewhat disjointed. There were several moments where I found myself briefly lost while adjusting to the changes in perspective.
That said, Janet Skeslien Charles writes with warmth, intelligence, and strong emotional detail, particularly when exploring themes of loneliness, artistic ambition, friendship, and personal reinvention. The novel shines most in its quieter character moments and immersive literary atmosphere. Readers who enjoy books centered around Parisian life, libraries, art, and emotionally introspective female protagonists will likely find a great deal to appreciate here.
