During my insightful conversation with Marcy Newman-Hess, we dove into five key questions aimed at uncovering the essence of her journey as a woman entrepreneur and service provider in the vibrant landscape of California. Enjoy her responses!
Can you share a bit about your journey to becoming a woman entrepreneur/service provider in this state?
I started my career coaching business in 2008 after some encouragement from my dad. I had only had my master's for a year at that point and was new to the field of career services. I had major imposter syndrome thinking to myself, "who am I to be giving resume advice?" I created business cards off Vista Print and asked a friend from middle school to build me a website. I was working in higher ed at a local university in the Career Center so it made sense to do this kind of work privately, as my side hustle. Many years later I finally feel confident and competent in the work I do, be it revising someone's cover letter (yes, cover letters are still a thing) or coaching them in their next career move. I found I was good at supporting, guiding, teaching, mentoring and coaching others, and the empathy I feel towards others makes me good at what I do. I never studied business in college so that has been a big learning curve for me but I am glad I took my dad's advice as I helped so many people throughout the years and to have a piece of their personal or professional clarity or development has been the most rewarding aspect of my work.
How do you incorporate the unique lifestyle and culture of California into your service offerings?
I'm a California Native and am fairly laid-back in my approach to my business. It's largely referral-based and I'm a one woman show. I have a full-time role at a university and so I work on my business as much as I can to support clients, respond to inquiries, update my website, and so forth. I am very relational in how I share my business and have leveraged relationships from mentors to family and friends to spread the word about my business. I think my approach to career coaching is personable, warm and informal and allows for a customized approach to working with others based on their lifestyle, background, and interests.
How do you see your service evolving or growing to meet the changing needs of Californians in the future?
I think by recognizing the rise of remote work and the gig economy. Realizing that with inflation and the growing stressors of life, especially for women and parents, I work with people as best I can in terms of scheduling to payment plans. I'm accommodating because flexibility is so needed in our current culture.
How does your business/service cater to the needs and challenges that my followers, particularly moms in California, commonly face?
As a step-mom and newlywed, I feel so much camaraderie with women and moms. We do a lot for our families and our communities and experience so much of the emotional "labor" that comes with raising a family. I love working with women and moms in particular because I understand the challenges and opportunities. Women are still getting paid less than men in the workplace and so I am a big advocate of self-advocacy and pay equity. I encourage women to apply for the role they feel under qualified for, or ask for the raise. I am such a fan of the mantra "don't ask, don't get." And I want all my clients but especially women and mothers to feel valued, confident, and in control of their careers. I help them revise their LinkedIn profile but beyond that I believe I am helping them realize their self-worth.
Finally, what message or piece of advice would you like to share with my followers to inspire them on their journey to balancing mom life in California?
Lean on your community. Ask for support. Own your tiredness or desire to just vege on the couch watching Bravo (speaking from experience). Allow yourself the space to prioritize your self-care and mental health so you can show up for others. Get outside and take the work call. Get on the peloton before your day starts, after drop-off. Schedule a date night and get a sitter. And prioritize your friendships. I love my husband and I still need my girlfriends.
In closing, I am proud to call Marcy (Newman) Hess not just a mentor and coach but also a friend. Her warmth, wisdom, and genuine dedication to uplifting others have left an indelible mark on those she encounters. Marcy's journey as a career coach and entrepreneur not only inspires but also reminds us of the power of connection and support in navigating life's challenges. As we celebrate her accomplishments and contributions to the community, I am honored to stand alongside Marcy as she continues to make a difference in the lives of California moms and professionals. Here's to friendship, empowerment, and the endless possibilities that lie ahead with Marcy by our side.
