A Mystery & Thriller Book Review

This Weekend Doesn’t End Well for Anyone by Catherine Mack is a witty and fast-paced mystery thriller set at an exclusive Bahamas resort during a murder mystery writers conference gone horribly wrong. Blending humor, murder, secrets, and dysfunctional relationships, the novel follows bestselling author Eleanor Dash as what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend quickly turns into another real-life murder investigation. Filled with eccentric characters, buried tensions, and mounting danger, the story delivers an entertaining locked-room-style mystery with plenty of twists along the way.

The novel follows Eleanor Dash, a mystery author who has somehow found herself entangled in multiple real-life murder investigations despite desperately wanting a normal vacation. This time, Eleanor travels to an all-inclusive resort in the Bahamas for a writers conference, only to discover a dead body waiting for her shortly after arrival. Surrounded by fellow authors, complicated past relationships, professional rivalries, and long-standing grudges, Eleanor realizes nearly everyone at the resort could have a motive for murder.

As the investigation unfolds, Eleanor must navigate ex-boyfriends, career tensions, jealousies, and hidden secrets while trying to determine who can actually be trusted. With danger escalating throughout the weekend, the resort becomes increasingly claustrophobic as Eleanor races to uncover the truth before the killer strikes again.

Overall, the story itself was incredibly entertaining and kept me invested from beginning to end. The mystery was layered well, the setting was fun, and the cast of characters created plenty of tension and unpredictability throughout the novel. However, I personally struggled with the author’s writing style. Much of the book is written as though Eleanor is speaking directly to the reader, frequently explaining murder mystery tropes and discussing how to write crime novels throughout the story itself. While I understand this was likely an intentional stylistic choice—especially since this is the third book in the Eleanor Dash series—it often pulled me out of the actual mystery unfolding on the page.

A Clever Murder Mystery With a Meta Storytelling Style

One of the strongest elements of the novel is its atmosphere. The Bahamas resort setting creates the perfect backdrop for a glamorous yet dangerous murder mystery, and the isolated conference environment adds to the tension as suspicions build between characters. The pacing moves quickly, with enough twists and interpersonal drama to keep the story engaging throughout.

At the same time, the heavy use of direct narration and commentary about mystery writing itself did not fully work for me personally. Eleanor frequently pauses the story to address the reader directly and explain narrative techniques, murder mystery structures, or commentary about writing crime fiction. While some readers may enjoy the self-aware and meta approach, I found myself wishing the focus had remained more centered on Eleanor’s actual investigation and emotional journey rather than repeatedly stepping outside the story to discuss the craft of mystery writing.

Still, despite my frustrations with the narration style, the mystery itself remained strong enough that I genuinely wanted to know how everything would unfold by the end.
