A Historical Fiction Book Review

The French Promise by Fiona McIntosh is a sweeping and emotional historical fiction novel that continues the story of Luc and Lisette following the aftermath of World War II. Set across England, France, and Australia, the novel explores love, trauma, resilience, and the lasting impact of war, while weaving together multiple timelines and perspectives in a deeply compelling way.
The novel follows Luc Ravens, a former French Resistance fighter, and Lisette, a former British spy, as they attempt to rebuild their lives after the war. Now living in England, they carry the weight of everything they endured, and Luc in particular struggles with the emotional scars of his past. Hoping for a fresh start, they set out for Australia to begin again—but the past is not so easily left behind.
At the same time, a young law student named Max Vogel is dealing with a loss of his own when he is given a box of letters that connect him to a father he never knew—and ultimately to Luc. As Max searches for answers, his journey intertwines with Luc’s, bringing long-buried secrets to light and forcing both men to confront truths that will shape their futures.
Overall, I absolutely loved this book. Having already read The Lavender Keeper, it was incredibly meaningful to continue Luc and Lisette’s story and see what their life looked like after the war. Watching Luc struggle with his inner demons—and gradually work through them—added so much emotional depth. I especially loved how his healing unfolded through the smaller, meaningful interactions with people who entered his life at different moments. It made his journey feel real, layered, and deeply human.
A Powerful Continuation of Love, Trauma, and Healing
At the heart of the novel is its exploration of what happens after survival—how people rebuild, carry grief, and find a way forward. Luc and Lisette’s relationship remains a strong emotional anchor, while Luc’s internal battle is portrayed with nuance and honesty. The addition of Max’s storyline adds another layer, connecting past and present in a way that expands the emotional scope of the story.
The writing is immersive and emotionally resonant, with richly described settings that transport you from postwar England to the lavender fields of Provence and beyond. The pacing allows each storyline to unfold naturally, balancing reflection with moments of tension and discovery. The interconnected narratives create a sense of depth while maintaining clarity and engagement throughout.

The French Promise is a moving and richly layered sequel that deepens the story of Luc and Lisette while expanding the world around them.
